1
OVERALL BREAKOUT THEME:
1) ALWAYS have 2 places to go
2) NEVER pass ahead across the slot (Valley of Doom); if all options on your OWN side of the ice are unavailable, GO BACKWARDS, NEVER ahead & across.
LEFT SIDE SCENARIO:
Turnover has brought our LD behind net and moving away from pressure from Opponent #2.
Our wings move to half boards. C comes down slot and mirrors movement of LD.
2
TWO PLACES TO GO:
As LD moves left, both C and LW are available.
3
LD chooses LW for pass.
Since play has moved to left side, the RW (weak side) begins diagonal sprint to become available
4
Opponent #1 pressures our LW, so LW taps puck to C moving parallel up ice.
Alternatively, LW can bang puck UP BOARDS, NOT ACROSS CENTER into space for RW, who is still crossing over.
5
C could bank pass to RW, who has split and gotten behind Opponent defense.
In this case, C chooses to carry puck up.
LW weaves behind C to become available
6
NOTICE:
Opponent fore checker #2 is left badly behind the play.
LESSON:
It's not usually a good idea to chase D behind the net on their breakout.
